SOUNDS & BOMBS - MUSIC AND ART IN CONFLICT ZONES

Does culture survive in times of war? Art and music are historically powerful forms of resistance and expression in conflict zones. The panel reveals how, amidst the chaos of war, creativity blossoms as a foundation of hope and resilience. In contexts of violence, artists find in sound and images a way to communicate their emotions, resist, and rebuild their identities. Sarah Williams, CEO of IMPEL, manager of the Palestine Music Expo, and advisor to Earth Percent, will share her experience of promoting music as a tool for peace and transformation in devastated territories. Ruth Daniel, founder of the project In Place of War, highlights how music and the arts play an essential role in assisting populations affected by conflict, creating spaces for healing and reflection. Clayton Nascimento, actor and writer, brings his experience in narratives addressing pain – such as the one he portrayed in the acclaimed play Macacos, which he wrote, directed, and starred in. Writer and educator Maria Vilani, mother of Criolo and an important figure in the Grajaú neighborhood in São Paulo, shares her experience in raising awareness about the effects of conflicts on communities. Natália Ventura, from Fábricas de Cultura, expands the discussion on the importance of culture in peripheral areas and vulnerable situations, reinforcing the power of art as resistance and social transformation. Together, these voices offer a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between sound, emotions, and art in times of destruction, emphasizing human resilience in the face of the impossible.
